Got a Laptop on My Lap

What is it about working from a laptop that makes blogging seem so much more exciting? Maybe I’m just a dork. LOL

Charlie is playing SpongeBob Squarepants Collapse on my PC, so I’m sitting on my bed surfing from my laptop. Catchin’ up on my blogging since I can’t really work from my laptop. It’s useful for a few things, but too old to really be any good with images and design and stuff.

The cursor keeps jumping around on me while I’m typing, and it’s driving me crazy, so I’m going to end this entry. We went to the park after school since it was nice for a change, so I’ll have some pics and video later.

Then go get some! I started EasyBlogHelp.com, because I was sick of all the snarky-ness and nastiness on some of the blog forums I visit. (I won’t say which ones!) So I started easybloghelp.com which is a blog I will update with blogging platform tips and a forum where I hope a lot of bloggers will come and ask questions and share what they know. Transferring Your WordPress Blog From One Host To Another

OR: The Bastids Stole My Widgets!

I took all the precautions and steps for a smooth transition when I transferred sherryness.com from one host to another, today, to make sure my WordPress stuff stayed in-tact.

I exported my old posts/settings and backed up everything from the server before I changed the name servers on my registrar.

The name propogated, I uploaded my exported XML file with my old posts/settings, and uploaded all the necessary schtuff to my new site as far as images and such.

A few tweaks here and there and – voila! Beautiful transition. But where are my stinking widgets?

I hand-coded from scratch a hole mess of widgets for my side bar and THEY ARE GONE! I can re-write them, but geeze, oy, and ug. Who knew they would just disappear in the transition?

Fortunately my execphp survived the transition (that’s what allows you to make php-capable widgets), and at least that plug-in is activated. I’ll have to re-write my widgets this weekend, maybe Sunday, after I finish some work for my newest client.

In the meantime, my sidebar is ugly as sin – ’cause the bastids stole my widgets!

Okay, I’m About To Get All ‘Captcha’ On Your Ass

The comment spam I’ve been having to manage is getting ridiculous. I hate to do it, but I think I’m gonna have to go “Captcha” on ya’ll. (Why “captcha” makes me want to type in slang is beyond me, but whuddeva….)

Also, pay no attention to the weirdness that is going on on the navigation bar (that column on the left). I’m wanting to get a bit more stylized, so I’m trying to learn to work with widgets and such.

Of course, I have to do it myself and not use template or cookie cutters, so it’s gonna look weird until I figure it out. I did use “spiffy” for the rounded corners thing on the bottom though. I always use “spiffy” for rounded corners. ‘Cause that is just tedium to do it all yourself.

I love “Spiffy.” I’ll post a link later, but right now I gotta run. I think it’s actually hit 40 degrees outside! If so, that’s the first time that’s happened since sometime in November. Love it!

Mother’s Against Nature

They did not cancel school today, despite a wind chill, when I woke up, of 37 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. Whatever. Whatever you have to do to keep your little school district going.

But as a MOTHER, I could not, would not, will not, do not send MY CHILD out into the world when it is 37 DEGREES BELOW ZERO. Never ever. No apologies. Nope, will NOT do it. Nothing is worth that.

I can NOT imagine the parent that thinks it is ok to subject a child to that for 2 hours’ worth of kindergarten on a shortened day. Nope.

This Mother kept her child home, warm, safe, and happy on this day, February 20, 2008, when the wind chill reached an official 41 below zero.

Send my five-year-old out in that? You have to be fucking KIDDING ME. He wins. You lose. Go away.

Not Much of a Storm, I Dare Say…

If you’ve been following my video blogging of “the big blizzard” of February 17, 2008 here in West Des Moines, Iowa, I’ll just wrap up the day with this rather anti-climactic post.

The snow stopped, the wind never did pick up very much, and the temperature reached 34 degrees and melted a lot of our snow! Not much of a blizzard, then, I guess. Here is the final video installment:

Wind Gusts February 17 2008 Blizzard West Des Moines Iowa

I took this at approximately 1:20 p.m. It’s not snowing anymore, but the wind is definitely picking up. I would say the gusts are hitting about 20 miles per hour, with sustained winds of about 10 to 15 miles per hour. Watch the dark trees for contrast to see the blowing snow flying around. I most definitely need a better camera for video blogging!

West Des Moines, Iowa: Blizzard Intensifies Only Slightly by 11:27 am February 27 2008

As you can see in the video, there is a little bit more snow coming down, and we are seeing a few wind gusts, but those are the only real changes since the video I posted this morning that was taken at 9:16 a.m.

They’re saying the snow may taper off soon, and the wind will start picking up later this afternoon. I hope there is still enough light to capture it if we get some of those 50 mph gusts they are predicting. It’s also clear from these videos that I need to get a better video camera if I’m going to continue video blogging!
