Saturday B.S. – Poe’s Birthday, Weird Words, Weird Horoscopes And Cryptograms!

Brilliant Stuff for Saturday, January 19, 2008:

Word:  cackhanded – I was just happily reading along the other day, minding my own business, when I came across the word cackhanded.  Sometimes you come across a new word and you say to yourself, “Oh, there’s a word I don’t know.  I wonder what it means.  I will look it up.”  Other times, you come across a word you don’t know that jumps off the page and makes you say, “What the hell IS that thing???”  Which was the case for me with ‘cackhanded.’  Oh, I did look it up, and it has two meanings:  the first is left-handed and the second is clumsy or foolish.  Brilliant word!  Seems like kind of an insult to lefties, though.

News Story:  Man makes his annual visit to Edgar Allan Poe’s grave.  January 19th is Poe’s birthday, so each year this man leaves 3 red roses and a half-filled bottle of cognac, carrying on a mysterious tradition that has been happening since 1949.  The story is found here.  Poe was born January 19, 1809 and died October 7, 1849.

Time Waster:  Do you like cryptograms?  I’m addicted to them lately!  This gives you all the cryptograms you want to play, and you play them right online.  It’s really intuitive and clever, as well.  When you fill in the letter you think correlates to a particular code letter, it fills in all the rest of that same letter for you.  If you want to change it, just change one and all the rest change for you.  Brilliant!  It has other great features too, but I think I’ll just let you explore them for yourself.  Cryptograms.org
